Your Uterus Is Shrinking: Involution and Afterpains
Your Uterus Is Shrinking After Birth 🤍 Those postpartum cramps?
YOUR UTERUS IS SHRINKING: HERE’S WHAT THAT MEANS
During pregnancy, your uterus grew from the size of a pear to the size of a watermelon. Now it’s working its way back. This process is called involution, and it happens faster than you might expect — but it can also feel pretty intense while it’s happening.
THE TIMELINE 📅
- 🐶 Right after birth: Your uterus is about the size of a grapefruit and sits just below your belly button. Your nurse will press on it to check it’s firm — this can be uncomfortable.
- 📆 By Day 10: Your uterus has dropped back into your pelvis and is no longer felt from the outside.
- 🗓️ Around Week 6: It’s back to its pre-pregnancy size — roughly the size of a pear again.
AFTERPAINS: WHAT THEY FEEL LIKE 😬
As your uterus contracts back down, you may feel cramping — especially in the first few days. These are called afterpains, and they can be surprisingly strong.
- 🤱 First-time moms tend to feel them less intensely
- 👩👧👦 Second and third-time moms often feel them more strongly with each birth
- 🥛 Breastfeeding triggers oxytocin, which triggers contractions — so afterpains often peak during nursing sessions
Ibuprofen taken before nursing can help. Ask your provider what’s safe for you.
WHY THIS IS ACTUALLY GOOD NEWS 🎉
A uterus that contracts well means less bleeding and faster recovery. Those uncomfortable cramps are proof your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
When the nurse presses on your belly to check uterine firmness, it’s not just routine — a firm, well-contracted uterus is the #1 protection against postpartum hemorrhage.
WHEN TO CALL 📞
- ❌ You have heavy bleeding alongside cramping that doesn’t ease
- ❌ Cramping gets worse instead of better after Day 4 or 5
Your body is quietly doing something remarkable right now. Give it grace while it gets there. 🤍
