Your digestion feels weird — here's why 🦠 Birth, hormones, and antibiotics disrupted your gut.
Why your digestion feels different — and how to support your gut right now
Your gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria living in your digestive system — took a big hit during pregnancy, labor, and birth. Hormonal changes, antibiotics if you had them, stress, altered diet, and the massive physical event of giving birth all affect the microbial ecosystem that lives inside you.
It is rebuilding now. And you can help.
🔬 What happened to your microbiome
During pregnancy, your gut microbiome shifts naturally to support a healthy pregnancy. After birth, especially if you had a C-section or antibiotics during labor, that microbial community is disrupted more significantly.
A disrupted gut microbiome is linked to increased inflammation, mood changes, digestive issues, and — relevant if you had GD — less efficient glucose metabolism.
🩸 GD note: Research shows that gut bacteria play a meaningful role in insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation. Women who had GD often show gut microbiome differences that persist postpartum. Supporting your gut health now is also supporting your metabolic health long-term. |
🌿 What actually supports gut recovery
- Fiber from vegetables, fruit, legumes, and whole grains — fiber feeds beneficial bacteria
- Fermented foods: yogurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi — these add beneficial bacteria directly
- Variety: eating a wide range of plant foods supports a diverse microbiome
- Limiting ultra-processed foods, which feed less-helpful bacteria
- If you were on antibiotics: consider a quality probiotic — ask your provider for a recommendation
💊 Should I take a probiotic?
Probiotics can help after antibiotic disruption. If you had antibiotics during a C-section or for another reason around birth, a probiotic may be worth discussing with your provider. Look for one with multiple strains including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.
If you are breastfeeding, your breast milk also transfers beneficial bacteria to your baby — another reason nursing, even partially, supports your baby's microbiome alongside yours.
😮 Why your digestion feels weird
Constipation, bloating, or irregular digestion in the first weeks postpartum is very common. Your gut motility slowed during pregnancy and is waking back up. Pain medications, iron supplements, and reduced activity all affect digestion too. Fiber, water, and gentle movement are your best tools.
Your gut is not broken. It is just reorganizing. Feed it well and it will return the favor. 🤍 |
