Sleep and Blood Sugar: The First Week
Broken sleep doesn’t just make you tired — it affects your hunger, cortisol, energy, and glucose too.
SLEEP AND BLOOD SUGAR: THE FIRST WEEK POSTPARTUM 😴
You already know the first week is exhausting. What you might not know is that the broken sleep you’re getting right now is doing more than making you tired — it’s actually affecting your blood sugar, your hunger, and your metabolism. Here’s what’s happening, and what actually helps.
WHAT SLEEP DEPRIVATION DOES TO YOUR BODY 🧠
- 📈 Cortisol rises when you’re under-slept — and cortisol raises blood sugar
- 🤩 Hunger hormones go haywire: ghrelin (makes you hungry) goes up, leptin (makes you full) goes down
- 🍩 You crave sugar and carbs more intensely — this is biology, not weakness
- 📉 Insulin sensitivity drops, meaning your body has to work harder to manage glucose
All of this is happening at once in the first postpartum week. It’s a lot. And it’s temporary.
🩸 GD Note: For moms with a history of GD, sleep deprivation is one of the most underrated metabolic stressors in the postpartum year. Your body is already recalibrating its insulin response — poor sleep makes that harder. This isn’t about being perfect. It’s just good to know why your energy and appetite feel so chaotic right now.
WHAT ACTUALLY HELPS ✨
- 😴 Sleep when baby sleeps. Yes, really. The dishes can wait.
- 🧑🤝🧑 Take one longer stretch of sleep per 24 hours if at all possible — even 3–4 hours in a row makes a difference
- 🍗 Eat protein with every meal. It steadies your blood sugar and keeps you fuller longer, even on no sleep.
- 💧 Stay hydrated. Dehydration makes fatigue and blood sugar spikes worse.
- 📵 Limit your phone at night. Screen light disrupts the little sleep you do get.
- 👥 Accept help. Night feeds shared with a partner, family member, or postpartum doula are not a luxury — they’re recovery.
WHEN DOES IT GET BETTER? ⏰
Most newborns start to consolidate sleep somewhere between 6 and 12 weeks. That first stretch of 4–5 hours feels like a miracle when it arrives. Hang on.
You are not failing, you are surviving a season. 🤍
