Intrusive thoughts
THAT SCARY THOUGHT YOU JUST HAD?
Intrusive Thoughts 💭
What intrusive thoughts are, why almost every new mom has them, and why they don’t mean what you think they mean
Malama Clinical Team · Postpartum Series
You were holding your baby. Or bathing them. Or standing at the top of the stairs.
And a thought flashed through your mind that you did not ask for and immediately wanted to take back.
Maybe it was an image of dropping them. Or something darker. And you thought: “What kind of mother thinks that?” This is called an intrusive thought and almost every new mother hs them.
💡 What are intrusive thoughts?
Intrusive thoughts are sudden, unwanted images or impulses that pop into your head out of nowhere. You did not choose them. You do not want them. They horrify you the moment they arrive.
And they are incredibly common. Research shows up to 9 out of 10 new parents have them.
🧠 Why does this happen?
Your postpartum brain is exhausted, flooded with hormones, and running its threat-detection system at full power to protect your baby. Intrusive thoughts are what that system looks like in overdrive.
Your brain is not suggesting you do these things. It is flagging them as dangers to avoid. The horror you feel is proof of that — it means the thought conflicts with everything you actually want.
📋 The thoughts nobody says out loud
These are real thoughts that real moms have reported. Listed here so you can recognize them — and know you are not the only one.
💧 Accidental harm
- Dropping the baby down the stairs
- Spilling hot coffee or boiling water on the baby
- Dropping the baby during bath time
- Forgetting the baby in a hot car
- The baby rolling off the changing table
- Accidentally smothering the baby while co-sleeping
😰 Impulse thoughts — the scariest ones
These feel completely out of character. They are the most widely studied intrusive thoughts in new parents and are not a sign of danger.
- An impulse to throw the baby, especially when the crying won’t stop
- A flash of shaking the baby
- An image of dropping the baby into the bath
- A thought involving a knife or scissors near the baby
- An impulse to press on the soft spot on the baby’s head
💨 Thoughts about yourself
- Thoughts of driving off a bridge or into traffic
- Feeling like everyone would be better off without you
- Images of hurting yourself

🗣️ Sexual intrusive thoughts
This is the type moms are most afraid to say. And the most common one to keep secret.
Some moms have fleeting sexual images involving their baby during diapering or bathing. These thoughts are disgusting to them. They feel like the worst thing a mother could think.
They are intrusive thoughts. Not desires. Not fantasies. Your brain generates a threat signal — and your horror is proof it means nothing.
| You are not broken. You are not dangerous. 🤍 Having these thoughts does not make you a bad mother. Struggling with them, being horrified by them, searching at midnight for answers — that is what love looks like when it is scared. Postpartum Support International: 1-800-944-4773 | postpartum.net |
