Sex After Baby: Your Desire, Your Identity, Your Timeline ๐
You've been cleared at six weeks.
The six-week clearance is a medical milestone, not a relationship deadline.
Your provider may clear you at six weeks. Maybe your partner has started making hopeful gestures. And you areโฆ not interested. At all. Or you want to want to, but your body feels like a stranger. All of this is normal. All of this is biology. And none of it is permanent.
What's happening in your body ๐งฌ
Estrogen is low โ especially if you're breastfeeding, where prolactin keeps estrogen suppressed. Low estrogen causes vaginal dryness, thinning of vaginal tissue, and reduced physical sensation. This is a physical reality, not a personal failing. Add to this: a healing pelvic floor, exhaustion, and the fact that your body has been touched and needed constantly for weeks. The last thing many new moms want is more physical contact. That is a completely sane response to a physically saturated life.
The identity piece nobody talks about ๐
Becoming a mother changes how many women relate to their bodies and their sexuality. Your body just did something enormous and primal. For some women, that creates deeper embodiment and confidence. For others, there's a process of reclaiming the body as something that belongs to you โ not just to your baby, not just to reproduction. This is valid. You are allowed to take time with this.
Having the conversation with your partner ๐ฌ
The six-week clearance is a medical milestone, not a relationship deadline. Some language that might help:
- "My body still doesn't feel like mine in that way yet โ I need more time."
- "I want to get there, but I need [X] to feel more ready."
- "Can we reconnect in other ways for now?"
When you are ready ๐
Take it slowly. Lubricant is essential โ vaginal dryness postpartum is real and significant. Start with what feels comfortable and expand from there. There's no performance standard here.
Your sexuality is still yours. It just went somewhere quiet for a while. It will find its way back. ๐ฑ
