What Prolactin Is Doing to Your Brain and Body ๐Ÿผ

There's a hormone running the show right now โ€” and it's doing a lot more than making milk.

There's a hormone running the show right now โ€” and it's doing a lot more than making milk.

If you're breastfeeding, there's a hormone called prolactin quietly shaping your experience right now. Every time your baby nurses or you pump, prolactin surges. It's a supply-and-demand system โ€” and prolactin is the messenger. But it doesn't just stay in your breasts. It crosses into your brain, and there it has some significant effects.

The brain effects nobody talks about ๐Ÿง

Prolactin is calming. It has a mild sedative effect on the nervous system โ€” part of why nursing can feel peaceful and grounding even when everything else feels chaotic. It activates reward pathways in the brain associated with nurturing behavior.

It also suppresses dopamine. Because dopamine is tied to motivation, drive, and libido, high prolactin + low dopamine can equal lower sex drive, less go-get-'em energy, and sometimes a flat or blunted mood. This is not depression. This is hormonal biology doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Why your libido has left the building ๐Ÿšช

Prolactin suppresses estrogen. Low estrogen causes vaginal dryness, reduced sensitivity, and lower desire. This is a physical reality, not a relationship problem. Your body is not choosing your baby over your partner โ€” it's running a biological program that evolved over millions of years. If and when you're ready to reconnect sexually, lubricant is your best friend right now. And knowing the biology can take a lot of pressure off both of you. ๐Ÿ’›

Prolactin and your period

High prolactin suppresses ovulation โ€” which is why breastfeeding delays the return of your period. This isn't foolproof contraception, but it is the mechanism behind the postpartum period delay many moms experience.

If you're not breastfeeding

Prolactin drops quickly after birth when breastfeeding isn't established. Your hormones recalibrate on a different timeline โ€” estrogen returns sooner, your period may come back earlier, and libido may return faster.

Your body is intelligent. It's running its programming beautifully โ€” even when it doesn't feel that way. ๐ŸŒฑ
