Your First Hours: What's Happening in Your Body Right Now
Your First Hours: What's Happening in Your Body Right Now You just had a baby!
You did it.
There are no words big enough for what you just did. Your body grew a human being and then brought that person into the world. You are extraordinary. 💪
In these first hours, everything is changing at once. Your baby is here. Your body is in a different phase than it has ever been before. And your brain is shifting and trying to take all of it in.
Your Hormones
We talked about the hormone cliff — that dramatic, 1,000-fold drop in estrogen and progesterone that happens within 24 hours of delivery. You are living it right now.
This is why you might feel shaky, weepy, elated, exhausted, and wide awake all at the same time. It is not confusion. It is chemistry. Your body is adapting to one of the fastest hormonal shifts in all of human biology.
Your progesterone is dropping, which will eventually trigger milk production. Your estrogen is dropping, which you'll feel in your temperature, your mood, and eventually your sleep. And your oxytocin — the love hormone — is surging with every touch, every gaze at your baby, every feeding.
You are not on an emotional rollercoaster because you can't handle this. You are on an emotional rollercoaster because your hormones are doing something genuinely dramatic. Give yourself enormous grace.
Your Blood Sugar
For most moms with gestational diabetes, these first 24 to 48 hours bring something unexpected and welcome: blood sugar begins to normalize.
The human placental lactogen — the hormone that was blocking your insulin throughout pregnancy — is gone. Your placenta left when your baby arrived. And with it went the biggest driver of your gestational diabetes.
Most GD moms no longer need insulin by the end of Day 2. Some normalize even faster. You may find that foods you had to carefully manage during pregnancy affect you very differently now.
This is real. And it is wonderful news.
But please hear this too: normalization is not the same as resolution. Your metabolic story is not over. We will keep walking it with you, step by step, for the next year. For now, though — let your body rest. Let your blood sugar settle. And let yourself arrive.
Your New Reality
There is nothing quite like the first hours with a new baby.
Everything is heightened. Colors seem brighter. Sounds seem louder. Time moves strangely — some moments stretch on forever and others disappear before you can hold them.
This is oxytocin and adrenaline and the profound neurological rewiring of matrescence, all happening at once. You are being changed. Not broken. Not overwhelmed (even if you feel overwhelmed). Changed.
The person holding that baby right now is already different from the person who walked into that delivery room. You have crossed the threshold.
Welcome to the other side. You did it! We are here with you. 🤱🏽
