The Day 3 Crash: Why This Is the Hardest Day

Crying, anxious, exhausted, overwhelmed?

THE DAY 3 CRASH 💧

Malama Clinical Team · Day 3–5 Postpartum · Post 34 of 265

You might be crying right now and not even know why. That’s okay. That’s actually totally normal. Day 3 is hard for almost every new mom, and there’s a real reason for it.

Your body is just going through something big.

WHY TODAY IS SO HARD 🧠

In the first 2 days after birth, your hormones were sky-high. Now those same hormones are dropping fast. At the same time, your body is flooded with cortisol, your stress hormone, which peaks around Day 3–5.

Here’s what that feels like:

  • 😢 Crying for no reason (or every reason)
  • 😴 Exhausted but can’t sleep
  • 😕 Anxious, overwhelmed, or just… off
  • 🤐 Tender, swollen, and achy
  • 💭 Wondering if you made a huge mistake

All of this is normal. It will pass.

A QUICK NOTE IF YOU HAD GD 🩸

High cortisol raises blood sugar. That’s just how the body works.

If you have a meter at home, try a fasting check this week. You don’t need to stress about it. Just take a peek. If it’s above 100 mg/dL a few mornings in a row, mention it to your provider. It’s probably fine, and good to know either way.

WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW ❤️

  • 🙌 Let yourself cry. Seriously. It helps.
  • 🍜 Eat something warm. Even if you’re not hungry.
  • 😴 Sleep when you can. The dishes can wait.
  • 💬 Tell someone how you feel. You don’t have to perform “fine.”
  • 📵 Put your phone down and rest if you can.

THIS WILL GET BETTER ✨

The Day 3 crash is real, but it’s also temporary. Most moms start to feel more like themselves by the end of the first week.

If things feel darker or harder after Week 2, talk to your care team. Postpartum depression and anxiety are common and very treatable. Asking for help is not a weakness. It’s good parenting. Remember: you can’t pout from an empty cup.

You are doing it. Even on the hardest day, you’re doing it. 🤍
